The Benefits of Pony Visits in Early Childhood Education

At Turramurra Kindergarten, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning experiences happen when children connect with the world around them. One of our children’s favourite experiences is welcoming a very special visitor — Shortie the pony.
Through our partnership with Equine Attunement, children have regular opportunities to spend time with Shortie and learn about animals in a safe, engaging, and hands-on environment.
Meeting Shortie
During each visit, children can interact with Shortie in a variety of ways. They enjoy brushing his coat, patting him, feeding him, and learning how to safely approach and care for a pony.
For many children, this may be their first close interaction with a horse. These experiences create excitement, curiosity, and opportunities for meaningful learning.
Under the guidance of Zoe from Equine Attunement, children learn how to respect animals, understand their needs, and build positive relationships through gentle interactions.

Learning More Than Animal Care
While pony visits are certainly fun, they also support many important areas of early childhood development.
As children interact with Shortie, they are developing:
💛 Empathy and kindness
💛 Confidence and self-esteem
💛 Communication skills
💛 Emotional awareness
💛 Respect for living things
Children learn to recognise that animals have feelings and needs, helping them develop compassion and understanding that extends beyond the experience itself.

The Calming Effect of Horses
One of the unique benefits of equine-assisted experiences is the calming presence that horses naturally bring.
Shortie has a gentle and relaxed temperament, which helps create a peaceful environment for children. Simply being around horses can encourage children to slow down, focus on the present moment, and feel more connected to their surroundings.
Many children become noticeably calmer and more relaxed during these interactions, making the experience both enjoyable and beneficial for their emotional wellbeing.

Building Confidence Through New Experiences
Meeting and interacting with a pony can be a significant achievement for young children.
Some children approach Shortie with confidence straight away, while others may take time to observe before joining in. Both responses are valuable learning experiences.
By participating at their own pace, children develop confidence, resilience, and a sense of accomplishment as they become more comfortable around animals.
These positive experiences help children understand that they are capable of trying new things and overcoming uncertainty.
Learning Through Real-Life Experiences
At Turramurra Kindergarten, we believe children learn best through hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and engagement.
Pony visits provide opportunities to:
Ask questions and explore new interests
Develop responsibility and respect
Strengthen social and emotional skills
Connect with nature and animals
Create lasting memories
These experiences support our commitment to providing a rich and meaningful educational program that nurtures the whole child.

Creating Joyful Childhood Memories
Perhaps the greatest benefit of Shortie’s visits is the joy he brings to the children.
The excitement of seeing a pony at kindergarten, the smiles during feeding and brushing activities, and the confidence gained through each interaction all contribute to positive childhood memories that children will remember for years to come.
We are grateful to Zoe from Equine Attunement for sharing Shortie with our kindergarten community and helping create these special learning opportunities.
At Turramurra Kindergarten, we look forward to many more visits from Shortie and the valuable learning experiences he brings with him.
