Learning Through Nature: Our Kindergarten Garden Experience

At Turramurra Kindergarten, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the classroom walls. Our garden provides children with a hands-on opportunity to connect with nature, develop responsibility, and explore the world around them in a calm and engaging environment.

Every day, children take part in caring for our garden. They water the plants, observe changes in growth, and learn how to look after living things. Through these simple yet powerful experiences, children begin to understand the importance of patience, care, and consistency.

Our garden features a variety of plants, including herbs such as coriander, vegetables like corn, and a range of colourful flowers. These different plants give children the chance to explore diversity in nature and learn about where food comes from.

Gardening is more than just an outdoor activity—it is an important part of our educational approach. It supports children’s learning in science, encourages curiosity and observation, and helps build teamwork as they work together to care for the garden. It also promotes sensory exploration as children touch the soil, smell the herbs, and watch life grow over time.

Most importantly, the garden creates joyful learning moments. Children are often excited to see new growth, proudly take responsibility for their plants, and share their discoveries with friends and educators. These experiences help build confidence and a strong sense of connection to the natural world.

At Turramurra Kindergarten, we are committed to providing rich, meaningful learning environments where children can grow not only academically, but also socially, emotionally, and environmentally. Our garden is just one of the many ways we nurture curiosity, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.
