How to Reduce Your Child’s Screen Time: 3 Practical Tips from Miss PohWee

Technology is now a common part of everyday life, and many families are looking for ways to create a healthy balance between screen time, play, learning, and family connection.

At Turramurra Kindergarten, we often hear from parents asking for advice on how to reduce their children’s screen time and build healthier digital habits. Miss PohWee, Nominated Supervisor at Turramurra Kindergarten, shares three practical strategies that families can try at home.

Why Healthy Screen Habits Matter

Screens can be useful tools for learning and communication, but creating balanced routines helps children have more opportunities to explore, play, communicate, and develop important life skills.

By setting clear boundaries around screen use, children can build healthy habits while enjoying a variety of experiences, including creative play, outdoor activities, family conversations, and hands-on learning.

Tip 1: Set Clear Screen Time Rules

The first step is creating clear and consistent rules around when and where screens can be used.

Miss PohWee recommends having screen-free moments during important parts of the day, such as:

  • During mealtimes

  • Before bedtime

  • During family gatherings or social occasions

These boundaries help children understand that there are times for technology and times for connecting with others.

Mealtimes, for example, are valuable opportunities for children to practise communication skills, share conversations, and build relationships with family members.

Tip 2: Create Screen Time Limits

Another important strategy is setting clear limits on how much time children spend using devices.

Families can create routines that work best for them, such as:

  • Allowing screen time only on certain days

  • Setting specific time limits

  • Creating a consistent schedule for device use

For example, some families may choose to allow screen time only on weekends or for a short period at a set time.

Having predictable boundaries helps children understand expectations and develop self-control.

Tip 3: Encourage Children to Earn Screen Time

Miss PohWee also suggests connecting screen time with responsibility.

Children can be encouraged to complete simple, age-appropriate tasks before enjoying a short period of screen time as a reward.

Examples may include:

  • Helping with laundry

  • Cleaning up toys

  • Assisting with simple household tasks

This approach helps children understand that responsibilities are part of everyday life and encourages independence, teamwork, and a sense of achievement.

Creating a Healthy Balance

Reducing screen time does not mean removing technology completely. Instead, it is about helping children develop a healthy relationship with screens while making space for other important experiences.

Through play, conversations, creativity, outdoor activities, and family connections, children continue to build the skills they need for their development.

At Turramurra Kindergarten, we believe supporting children also means supporting families. Our educators are always happy to share ideas and provide guidance to help families navigate different stages of their child’s learning journey.
