2 min read

At Turramurra Kindergarten, children have opportunities to learn about the world around them through meaningful, hands-on experiences. One of their favourite experiences is welcoming Shortie the therapy pony, who visits regularly with Zoe from Equine Attunement.

These special visits give children the chance to get to know Shortie, learn about horses and discover how to care for animals in a calm and supportive environment.

Getting to Know Shortie

During each visit, children have the opportunity to spend individual time with Shortie, helping them become familiar with horses and observe their behaviour.

With Zoe's guidance, children learn about the everyday needs of horses, including what they eat. They discover that horses enjoy eating hay and grass and learn about the importance of providing appropriate care for animals.

These experiences encourage children to ask questions, observe closely and develop a greater understanding of the living world.

Learning Through Hands-On Activities

One of the highlights of Shortie's visits is the opportunity for children to help groom her and decorate her mane and tail.

These activities are not only enjoyable but also support children's development in several ways.

Developing fine motor skillsGrooming and decorating Shortie's mane and tail encourage children to practise using their hands and fingers with care and control.

Encouraging curiosity and observationChildren have opportunities to notice details, ask questions and learn more about horses through direct experiences.

Practising gentle interactionsWith guidance from Zoe and the educators, children learn how to approach and interact with an animal thoughtfully and respectfully.

Building understanding and responsibilityLearning about what Shortie eats and how horses are cared for helps children begin to understand the needs of other living things.

Finding Calm Through Connection with Animals

Spending quiet time with Shortie offers children a different pace from their usual daily activities.

Being near a pony encourages children to slow down, observe and focus on the experience in front of them. With supportive guidance from the adults around them, children can practise gentle interactions and become more familiar with animals.

Every child responds differently to these experiences, and children are supported to participate at their own comfort level.

Meaningful Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Turramurra Kindergarten, we value experiences that allow children to explore new interests and connect their learning with the world around them.

Shortie's visits bring together animal care, sensory exploration, observation and practical activities in a way that captures children's interest and encourages active participation.

We are grateful to Zoe from Equine Attunement for sharing her knowledge and bringing Shortie to our kindergarten regularly. These visits create memorable opportunities for children to learn, explore and develop an appreciation for animals.

Thank you, Zoe and Shortie, for being part of our Turramurra Kindergarten community!
